Integration of Aviation Automated Weather Observation Systems (AWOS) with Roadside Weather Information System (RWIS) combines multiple sources of current and forecast weather and aviation information to give rural pilots supplemental information to make more informed decisions. The initial display shows AWOS/ASOS locations with a sample information bubble displayed. Other information can be accessed using the main menu bar as described below.
This control is the starting point for changing how information is displayed on the screen. Clicking on one of the four items: Surface Conditions, Surface Forecast, Surface Layers, or Aviation Layers will cause a drop down menu with data set options that can be displayed on the map. Shown below are the different data options for: Surface Conditions, Surface Forecast, Surface Layers, and Aviation Layers menu.
The icons displayed from the data sets under: Surface Conditions, Surface Layers, and Aviation Layers; as well as the Weather data set under Surface Forecast are interactive. Clicking on an icon will display a box with details about clicked on icon.
The Legend displays the meaning behind the color or shape of an icon.
When viewing forecasts a new menu in the menu bar appears displaying future specified time and dates. Forecasts can be seen by either selecting a specific time and date in the drop down menu or using the arrow icons to navigate to the next or previous forecast. See below.
Wind Aloft and Temperature Aloft under the Aviation Layers menu show forecasts at specific elevations.
The Satellite data set under Aviation Layers contains several satellite viewing options that can be navigated by selecting a satellite view in the drop down menu or with the left or right arrow icons. See Below
When a menu is clicked on, a drop down menu of the data sets available for the category is displayed. Clicking on the open category in the Main Menu Bar will hide the drop down menu.
Zooming and Panning can be controlled with either your mouse or with the on screen buttons and sliders.
§ The scroll wheel on your mouse can be used to zoom in and out of the map.
· Scroll FORWARD to Zoom IN
· Scroll BACKWARD to Zoom OUT
§ Double Click with the LEFT mouse button to Zoom IN
§ Double Click with the RIGHT mouse button to Zoom OUT
With your mouse, left click and hold a point on the map. With the mouse button pressed, move your mouse in the opposite direction you would like to move the map.
On Screen Controls:
Zooming into the map while viewing Forecasts will display a greater level of detail on the weather patterns predicted.
Use this control to change the underlying view of the map. Click the Map, Satellite, or Terrain buttons to select the type of map to display the data on. Map view shows a street map. Satellite view shows a satellite view of the map. Terrain view shows a representation of the topography.
